With the mini kids hitting 3 weeks and beginning to learn to respect the other does outside in the play yard, it was time to take down the individual pens they were staying in overnight, and create a common area while still offering a place the kids can "escape" too when a doe gets too pushy (or grumpy from being jumped on, chewed on, etc.) Of course, within a day of this change, the weather returned to cold, wet and windy, and the indoor area became the playpen - and 8 kids leaping around and playing inside would make any sweet natured doe get grumpy!
The new pen adjoins the one that houses Dreamer (buckling) and Noah (wether), with the idea of letting them get acquainted with their mini neighbors with the safety of the pen between them and the does. After a few days, the does ignored them, and I would let them into the common area to interact with the other kids (supervised of course.) When the weather improved a bit yesterday afternoon and the mamas and kids were allowed out into their yard, Dreamer and Noah were allowed to join them (again supervised.) Raisin didnt like that her kids wanted to play with the "big boys" so I had to play referee a few times, but was interesting to see the two bottle babies learn to behave more like a kid and less like my babies.
After about 30 minutes of hanging by mama (me) they finally got up the nerve to play a bit - though both seem a bit skittish of their younger, smaller herd-mates! A few more sessions and think they will all fit together nicely, especially come weaning time, when Dutch will join Dreamer and Noah and they will be kept apart from the does (until breeding time.)
So, looking forward to when I can post a picture of all 10 kids together - maybe next post!
